Lyme Disease
Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is an illness caused by the Borrelia spp. Bacterium (to be specific a spirochete). It can be transmitted by ticks and other vector born insects such as mosquitoes and horse flies. The initial symptoms can include but not exclusively:
- The bulls-eye rash or erythema migrans (this is only seen in 1/3rd of cases). This is a definitive sign of Lyme disease.
- Mild to moderate joint and muscle pain
- Flu like symptoms
- Change in energy levels and/or fatigue
- Digestive disturbances
However some people experience just 1 of these symptoms and for a short time. For some people however, their illness doesn’t become obvious straight away. It can often be months or years before diagnosis as it can often be misdiagnosed as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, depression, thyroid imbalances or interstitial cystitis for example.
There are also co-infections that can be found alongside the Borrelia bacterium. These include Babesia, Bartonella, Mycoplamsa among others. Often the symptoms of these co-infections and Lyme disease overlap and it can be difficult to identify which infection is causing what symptom.
According to the NHS, the treatment for acute Lyme Disease is 28 days of antibiotics, usually doxycycline or amoxicillin. Unfortunately, this may not be enough and a full recovery doesn’t happen.
This is where herbal medicine can help.
Many patients are already receiving antibiotic treatment or feeling unsure about what approach to take. I make sure that the herbs and supplements that you are taking are effective and safe. I am happy to share the protocols with the other health professionals that you may be seeing. I also work alongside other health practitioners providing a holistic and rounded approach such as nutritionists. With the treatment of Lyme disease and the co-infections, it is vitally important to treat the individual as well as the infection itself. The symptoms can vary so widely that by having a consultation, you can ensure that the herbs you are taking are the ones that you need.
I stay up to date with the latest research and different approaches available for Lyme disease via conferences, webinars and readings.
